Celebrate Punch-Roll Day with GILLE!
Every year on March 7th, it’s time to celebrate Punch-roll Day – a day to honour a Swedish coffee break favourite that continues to grow and delight people across the country. For us at GILLE, this is the perfect day to celebrate both tradition and new innovation of a classic pastry that truly celebrates ‘fika’ as a way to spread everyday joy.
The Punch Roll is a very popular Swedish classic. It is celebrated on March 7th because that day was established early in the 2010s as a social theme day, because the Punch Roll quickly attracts eager fika enthusiasts.
At GILLE, we have seen Punch Rolls grow more popular every year, and today they are a staple in Swedish grocery stores. GILLE punch rolls have become popular for their balanced flavour, creamy filling and classic character. A favourite at home, at work and in cafés.
The eye-catching green marzipan has become so iconic that it is almost a symbol of the pastry itself in coffee culture. Traditionally, green colour is used to contrast with the chocolate-dipped ends and give the roll its classic look – it is instantly recognisable. It is such a familiar form that it has often been the model for other creations in other contexts – crocheted cushions, patterns on socks and even a pair of stylish earrings.
The characteristic flavour comes partly from the punch liqueur, which has its origins in Sweden dating back to the 18th century when arrack was first imported here as a spiced liqueur. Punch quickly became a national drink and is still found in both cocktail drinks and desserts today.
Although the classic punch roll is loved for the confectionery that it is, there are now many modern variations: two of these are GILLE Cocoa Rolls and GILLE Mint Rolls.
